Brady’s Band Festival

So the school district’s annual band festival was the other night. It was Brady’s first time attending and as a percussionist he was way in the back. He was also taking great pains to get out of sight when he saw me raise the camera.

I would’ve uploaded some video but some taterhead in front of us wouldn’t shut the hell up about how rad his kid was, somehow I avoided telling him exactly how little I cared about that particular subject.

I only have two pics from the evening where he wasn’t totally crouched behind his music stand, here they are:

He seemed to enjoy it, and after talking to him about next year, he seems serious to continue. We shall see!

Battle of the Books 2009

Brady had his school-wide Battle of the Books last Friday. There were six teams of four kids ranging from fourth- to sixth-graders. They had to answer 25 questions on any of the 18 books for this season.

Brady and a girl on his team were the only kids to read all 18 books although that did not give them a definitive edge, as the competition was quite a nail-biter. They seesawed back and forth every few questions and, ultimately, were tied for 1st at the end of 25 questions.

There was an overtime round of 5 questions for the two teams that were tied for first place. Brady’s team answered correctly on the first two questions while the opponents were unable to do the same. Both teams answered incorrectly on the third question, leaving the door still open for another tied round.

Brady’s team was able to clinch the win on the fourth question and went on to take the tie-breaker round 4-0.

Sweet Victory!

The winners were given medals and all participants received prize packs. Brady mentioned that someone bought pizza for them at lunchtime and they got to sit in the lunchroom and mow down slice after slice while the other kids stared forlornly at their wilted Fruit-by-the-Foot.

Here a parting shot of the winning team:

They move on to the district competition on May 20. Wish them well!

Brady’s First Concert

So Brady has his first band concert this evening. It was an interesting setup. They basically tried to highlight the students progression from knowing nothing to being able to play a basic song. The elementary kids played for at most 20 minutes then we were regaled with 4 long numbers from a single Junior High band.

They were good, no doubt about that, but when you drag 6-7-8 elementary school’s families together and a fraction of a single junior high having the balance of the performance opposite the attendance feels odd.

I know that they do it to spark interest in the students and parents at the elementary level so they get stoked about their kids being in band at a higher level so I can’t really be mad at them for that. Maybe it would have been more effective if more than half of the people present had a seat.

Anyhow, here’s the only ensemble song the elementary kids played:
